1.Online visualization of energy consumption:
This enables online visualization of energy consumption at consumer level. Online details of energy consumption of individual consumption shall not only help utilities in forecasting & management of energy supply across distribution system but also consumer shall be able empowered to monitor their consumption.
2.Advanced Metering Infrastructure (AMI):
This is a system which would not only provide energy consumption of each individual consumer periodically and automatically, but also help in two way communication between consumer & utility. Two way communications would facilitate partial / full control on load of consumers for effective peak load management. The energy consumption data could be audited to regulate theft & pilferages and also help in automated billing. Through these smart meters various signals for demand response, load dis/re-connection, operation of critical & non-critical loads, alerts can also be sent from control center to consumers and vice-versa. Tampering events are reported on-line to control center.
AMI would provide monitoring of outage upto consumer level, in place of feeder level and would help in reducing outage duration of even individual consumer in case of partial fault condition, thereby enabling utility to sell more power through same infrastructure.
AMI includes street light automation, in this street lights switch on & off automatically for pre-set timings, Dimming / brightening of street light based on the traffic condition, thus saving energy when there is very less traffic, e.g. late in the night.
3.Peak Load Management (PLM):
It is one of the Smart grid initiative through which utility can reduce the peak demand. This plays significant role in reducing the purchasing cost of power and to minimize the overloading of existing infrastructure. By managing load at the peak timing utility can minimize its Unscheduled interchange (UI) and higher purchasing cost of power at peak time. This management of peak demand would be done using Smart meters, which have been proposed to be installed in consumer premises as part of advanced metering infrastructure.
4.Renewable energy integration:
Installations of Rooftop solar PV system/ any other renewable energy generation would provide not only local generation support to utility but also would benefit consumers & society. Net metering facility would allow consumer to integrate with the grid and also to become prosumers. Enabling Utilization of renewable resources towards sustainability & green energy benefits.
